How custom steel fabrication works
From a photo and a few measurements to a finished component — the steps a fabrication job goes through in a proper workshop.

"Custom fabrication" can sound like a big, expensive process. For most jobs it isn't. Here's what actually happens between sending a photo and picking up a finished piece of steelwork.
1. Assess and quote
Every job starts with understanding what the part has to do. From your description, photos and measurements we work out the material, the section sizes and the joins, spot anything that might be a problem, and send a written quote with a clear scope. If something's unclear, expect a question or two before the quote — it's cheaper to ask than to guess.
2. Mark out
Steel is measured and marked before anything is cut. For repeat parts a template or a simple jig is made so every piece comes out the same. Marking out is where most of the accuracy in a job is decided.
3. Cut
Plate and sheet are cut on the guillotine — a clean, straight, square cut with no heat distortion. Tube and section are cut to length, with mitres where the design needs them. Edges are dressed so they're safe to handle and ready to weld.
4. Fold
Where the design calls for a bend — a folded bracket, a channel, a tray — the plate goes through the folder. Folding is stronger and cleaner than welding two flat pieces together, and it's how a lot of "simple" parts get their strength.
5. Fit-up
Parts are clamped, squared and checked against the drawing or template before any welding. On frames and gates this is where the diagonals are measured to make sure everything is square. A job that's fitted up properly is already most of the way to being a good job.
6. Weld
Tack, check, weld. MIG welding is used for most mild steel fabrication because it's clean, fast and consistent. Welds are sequenced to control distortion — welding everything on one side first is how frames end up banana-shaped. Joints that carry load are fully welded; cosmetic joints are welded where they're seen.
7. Finish
Spatter is removed, welds are dressed where they need to be, sharp edges are taken off and the piece is cleaned. From here it's either bare steel ready for your paint, primed, or sent out for powder-coating or galvanising if that was quoted.
8. Check and hand over
Before you collect, the finished piece is checked against the quote: dimensions, squareness, weld quality, finish. You get exactly what was quoted — and if anything had to change along the way, you'll have been told before it happened.
How long does it take?
Small brackets and repairs are often same-week. Gates, frames and batches depend on materials and the current workload; the quote will give an indicative timeframe. Galvanising and powder-coating add the coater's lead time on top.
